Going out on a run part six - Bobtailing

Writer's picture: Sean McCoySean McCoy

Bobtailing is the term used to describe driving a truck-tractor without its trailer.

Most people would look at a truck bobtailing and not really think that much about it. The truth is the trucks are more dangerous to drive without the trailer attached. It becomes a totally different animal. First, trucks are really designed to be operated with the trailer on, not off. So, everything from balance to ride characteristic to braking, and of course acceleration is different. The most troublesome is how the truck drives, and rides. The suspension is designed to have around 34,000lbs on the drives with no weight on them to soften the ride it is definitely rougher. The truck becomes front end heavy too. Those big diesel engines in their nose are not light, without accessories they weigh around seven thousand pounds.

Ricardo’s truck is so trick he had custom hidden hook up’s for his flatbed trailer. He spent time and money to modify the truck to accept the standard fittings on the machine, so he could haul this load for me. Thanks again Ricardo for all you did to make this run happen.
