Oversized Tires

Writer's picture: Sean McCoySean McCoy

I had some problems with a driver that was freaking out about the machine my client put on his truck. The machine was loaded in Pennsylvania at the previous job site, and as soon as he got it on the truck the complaining began.

The machine in question was an Xtreme 1255 Telehandler, one of the many I had been shipping all over the U.S. and I knew the spec on the machine well.

The driver had made such a fuss about it I wanted to be there when the machine dropped but I was unable to get there soon enough. We did pay him more because of the photographs showing the machine hanging over the deck. I had to find out why.

I rented a new Dodge Warlock, grabbed the wife, and headed out to the job site in Des Moines Iowa. It was about three hours from my home in Nebraska. I purchased a fancy digital tape measure, a couple of boards, and two-yard stick style levels at a Home Depot.

When we arrived at the Job site it was Lunch time. The crew was eating so, all the Equipment was idle, and the Safety director was there to assist me. We went out and measured the machine in question and a few others. In the end we discovered the tires were bigger than the factory spec.

When you become a client of mine expect more than you would from your average freight broker.
